In India, amaranth is known as rajgira (royal grain) or ramdana (grain given by Lord Ram). The earliest archeological evidence for amaranth in the Old World was found in an excavation in Narhan, India, dated to 1000–800 BCE.
Active Amaranth Institute members from India include Dr. Dinesh Chandra Joshi, who specializes in conventional and molecular plant breeding. He is a scientist in the Crop Improvement Division at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
